Governor Robert Bentley
A native of Columbiana, Alabama, Governor Bentley earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1969, after completing medical school, he joined the U.S. Air Force as a captain, serving as a general medical officer and later as an interim hospital commander. Following his military service, Bentley began a medical residency at the University of Alabama and then opened a medical practice in Tuscaloosa. During his career as a board-certified dermatologist, he has founded a number of small businesses, including Alabama Dermatology Associates, which he helped build into one of the largest dermatology practices in the southeastern United States. In 2002 and again in 2006, Bentley was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives representing Tuscaloosa County; he served on the Education Appropriations, Boards and Commissions, and Agriculture and Forestry Committees. Bentley was elected Alabama's governor in November 2010. He served as the Appalachian Regional Commission's 2012 states' co-chair.
