Health
Access to comprehensive, affordable health care is vital to social and economic growth in the Appalachian Region. ARC's health projects focus on helping recruit and retain health-care professionals in underserved Appalachian communities, and promoting better health through wellness and preventive measures. ARC also partners with other organizations to address the high incidence of life-threatening diseases in the Region.
Strategies include:
- Supporting local efforts to expand access to health-care programs;
- Supporting educational institutions that train health-care professionals;
- Providing support to primary-care systems;
- Promoting nutrition education and early screening as a means of eliminating or reducing the incidence of chronic diseases;
- Supporting programs that help eliminate drug and alcohol abuse;
- Encouraging the development of initiatives and investments that promote healthy lifestyles.
