Growing the Appalachian Food Economy

An Appalachian Regional Commission Workshop on
Sustainable Agriculture and Local Food Assets

December 7, 2011 • 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. • Greenville, South Carolina

Across the Appalachian Region, communities are developing partnerships to take advantage of economic opportunities in local food and sustainable agriculture. This development approach helps increase employment and income in communities, keeps dollars in local economies, supports small farming, and can improve the health and wellness of local residents. ARC, along with the Shi Center for Sustainability at Furman University, the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Greenville County Planning Department, LiveWell Greenville, and the Appalachian Council of Governments, is convening an educational workshop in Greenville, South Carolina, in December on the opportunities and challenges of growing the local food economy in Appalachian South Carolina and across the 13-state Appalachian Region.

Workshop presenters will include:

  • Peter Marks, Program Director, Local Food Campaign, Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, Asheville, North Carolina
  • David Hughes, Assistant Director, Clemson Institute for Economic and Community Development, Clemson, South Carolina
  • Fred Broughton, Marketing Specialist, South Carolina Department of Agriculture, Columbia, South Carolina
  • Dale Hawkins, Chef and Farmer, Fish Hawk Acres; and Founder, New Appalachian Farm and Research Center, Rock Cave, West Virginia

When: December 7, 2011, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Where: Melvin and Dollie Younts Conference Center, Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina.

Cost: $10.00; includes lunch and refreshments. Lunch will be prepared with locally sourced ingredients and is provided in part through the generous sponsorship of the Shi Center for Sustainability at Furman University and LiveWell Greenville.

Workshop participants are asked to contribute $10.00 via check or money order to help defray the cost of lunch and refreshments. Payment will be accepted at the door; no pre-payment is necessary.
