Author(s): Linda A. Jacobsen, Marlene Lee, and Kelvin Pollard
Author Organization(s): Population Reference Bureau

This report analyzes the effects of the recent recession on household wealth and economic well-being in Appalachia and assesses whether the Region has been disproportionately affected by the economic downturn. Using data from the 2000 Census and the American Community Survey for the period 2005 through 2011, the report examines the change in median household income, poverty, home ownership, housing cost burden, and home values. Multiple regression analysis is used to identify how closely county differences in aggregate housing value are associated with county differences in economic status in Appalachia.
